Anonymous Web Browsing Software
How do I do “Anonymous Web Browsing”?
Dear Yahoo! Friends,
Can some one please explain to me what “Anonymous Web Browsing” is all about? How do I do it? Is it really possible to be anonymous over the Internet? Are there any downloadable “Free Software” on the Internet for this purpose? Does it really work? Is it easy and simple? Is it legally O.K. to do so? Please provide me with details about this anonymous web surfing.
Thank you very much.
Warm regards and best wishes,
John Lazarus.
>>How do I do it?
There are many ways of doing it. Some more secure than others.
>>Is it really possible to be anonymous over the Internet?
>>Does it really work?
For all practical purposes, YES! …if you hide behind onion routing (eg. Tor network) aswell as a proxy. If a team of experts in the FBI were hellbent on tracing your identity, they could *probably* do it, but it’s no trivial task.
Bear in mind that *most* people browsing anonymously get found out not through flaws in the technology, but by posting too much personal information on blogs and forums etc. If you do decide to browse anonymously, you need to be very careful about what you write. Even seemingly vague information like your job and the city you live in could be enough to trace you. Never reveal any details.
>>Is it easy and simple?
Once the software is set up, yes. You just use your browser as normal. However, it greatly slows down the speed of your internet connection.
>>Is it legally O.K. to do so?
Yes, as long as you are not using the technology to do anything illegal, such as copyright infringement.
>>Are there any downloadable “Free Software” on the Internet for this purpose?
Yes. I would recommend the “Tor” network and the “Privoxy” proxy. They are fairly easy to set up on the Firefox browser. You can get a Torbutton plugin, to turn anonymous browsing on/off, which is handy, since you don’t want the slow anonymous connection on *all the time*.
To install the Tor client on your PC and to configure firefox to use
privoxy, check the detailed instructions here:
