Dynamics GP Partner Newsflash: Automatic installation of Great Plains and update

Traditionally Great Plains consultants to install Microsoft Dynamics GP directly from a CD on each workstation, including Terminal Server or Citrix. In large organization IT department has a tendency to control installing the software for each user, including ERP and the central accounting system. In Dynamics GP 10.0 and 9.0, you have the functionality of the installation package that allows you to control this. In this small publication we give you guidelines and ideas on where to obtain more information:

1. To create the installation package, please insert CD1 Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 (9.0 CD1 or GP if you on version 9.0, respectively). Click on Create an installation package. You will be prompted to select the package file – we recommend using UNC, which is open to every GP user in your organization, then follow the steps of simple decision, we would like to dedicate special paragraph decisions

2. Reports file location. On-screen Dictionary Location you can either choose the local path or switch Reports.Dic to a network folder. Let us pause here for a few seconds. If you have only a few users of Dynamics GP, then this is not a big deal to copy Reports.dic version, when the reports have been modified (usually SOP Blank Invoice form, where you place your company logo, information on discounts payment, etc..) in large company, where you have perhaps a hundred Great Plains users, it is good to have all users share the same Reports.dic Reports approved amendment

3. Forms. If you are familiar with Modifier with VBA, you know you can edit existing forms GP modifier in removing some fields, the new areas and attaching VBA script for them. Modifier with VBA allows you to create simple customization without going to the dealer for the Great Plains of the program for you

4. OLE Notes. As you probably know already, you can note OLE attaching objects OLE compliant (Excel, Word documents, images, for example). For all users be able to open OLE notes, enclosed by a users, you need to place notes in the OLE network folder

5. Letters. A typical example would be collection letters. The same idea remember to place them on the network share for all users

6. Distribution Facility GP. After you are finished with the creation installation package in the installation folder, you should see two files: Setup.exe and GreatPlains.msi. The link to the Setup.exe file could be emailed to your users, which is chosen for the installation of Great Plains, and the MSI file could be placed in the policy profile of the user or group for automatic deployment

7. Automatic Updates. Installation package is created off the original built Great Plains CD1 and 2. In reality, you must apply service packs GP on regular basis, more if you use GP add-ons – You distribute them as files with the extension Chink CNK. Service Packs usually include all SPs and patches previously. To publish setting update for you users of GP, you must first install it on your server GP, then enable for users to Tools-> Settings-> System-> Manage the Automatic Updates client window. update is placed in the table Syupdate. The control is very tight – if the user does not agree to the update – Great Plains closes and does not allow the user to continue working
