Linux Web Hosting Vs Windows Web Hosting
Saturday, August 13th, 2011Website Hosting, Windows Server vs. Linux is best?
We now have a hosting company that handles our website, I found they run Windows Server base. My question is should a website provider / hosting really be running Windows Server or make respectable hosting companies run Linux. I just need information such as the inconvenience of having Windows environment.
My site is hosted by Microsoft on Windows servers, but after administering many servers (Novell NetWare, OS / 2, Unix, Windows NT4 through Server 2003, Linux), Windows would be my last choice for most server functions. Windows server management likes because they think the user interface graphics will bring down the cost of directors, but the total cost of ownership is greater for Windows Servers (hardware more, less MTTF). I had used many NetWare servers that would not restart for 11 months, yet Windows NT4 ND 2000 servers that have been less responsible little need to be restarted every week or two, or processes to die or slow down because of memory leaks. NetWare servers Unix, so hard to build and settle, would run and run unattended. Unix servers can run PHP, a server-side scripting language powerful. Windows Web servers can not run PHP.
